About us

Personally selected. Jointly accountable.

MLI is an owner-managed leadership institute with a network of experienced leaders, coaches and specialists curated over many years. For every initiative we assemble the right team, and as an institute we bear responsibility for quality, course and result.

Especially amid the upheaval brought about by artificial intelligence, leadership roles need a counterpart who understands the situation and addresses blind spots.

Our stance

Leadership is not only talent. Effective leadership connects meaning and structure.

It gives people a direction worth striving for and at the same time creates clarity about priorities, roles and results. Both can be developed — as in competitive sports, with a counterpart without an agenda of their own, with whom the context can be clarified and the right moves practiced.

Those who work with us do so out of professional curiosity about what makes leadership effective. Our mission is to make leaders and leadership teams more effective, and to withdraw as soon as they can carry on the work without us.

What we let ourselves be measured by

When we agree on a flat fee, that amount stands. There are no additional charges for design, coordination or travel time within the Munich metropolitan region.

We begin with an analysis phase that can be commissioned on its own. If it does not give you a comprehensible diagnosis and a concrete next step, we do not invoice it.

What we work for

Leadership means encouraging people to set themselves in motion. In the information flood of our time, the task is to direct the fleeting resource of attention, despite all the noise, again and again to what matters: the shared mission.

This takes people with courage — the courage to break up old patterns of thought and to accept resistance. Supporting exactly these people is our mandate.

What follows from it

We help leaders increase their effectiveness while staying in good, high-performing shape themselves. We make social dynamics understandable and concentrate on the ways of thinking and behaving that have the greatest influence on business success.

The result is a working environment in which people unfold their potential and achieve the company’s goals with enjoyment.

How it began

Two months of retreat, and a question that would not let go.

How an observation inside a corporation became an institute.

Portrait of Sebastian Morgner
Sebastian MorgnerFounder and Managing Partner. Personally involved in every major initiative — as sparring partner and as the person responsible for analysis and architecture.

until 2011

The observation

Sebastian Morgner spent fifteen years in the financial industry, most recently as Global Head of Marketing at UniCredit in Milan. Strategies and transformations were planned and communicated with great effort. Yet six months later, in conversations with those who were supposed to live and execute them, little of it had regularly arrived.

2011

The break

He gives up his banking job. Two months at the Frauenchiemsee monastery, then years of conversations with forward thinkers and the study of more than a hundred books and studies. The question behind it: why does leadership so often fail to reach the people involved when it comes to executing strategically important goals?

from 2013

The answer

Out of this search emerges the approach of strategy activation, and with it MLI Leadership Institut. An approach to leadership that connects insights from neuroscience and psychology with goal-oriented management. Since then, it has been applied in initiatives, developed further and verified through before-and-after surveys.

The network

More than 100 coaches and specialists. One contracting party.

Major initiatives rarely fail because of the method and often because of who is staffed. That is why we propose people instead of sending out profiles.

How we curate

A network is only as good as the process behind it. Six steps decide who works with us, and who stays.

  1. Selection processPersonal leadership experience at the level one works for, a recognized coaching qualification and a personal interview with the institute’s management. Recommendations are no substitute for scrutiny.
  2. Trial or co-mandateThe first mandate is accompanied — in tandem or with feedback after each stage. Only then is it decided whether someone works independently for MLI.
  3. Client feedbackAfter every mandate, coachees and clients are surveyed. The feedback goes to the person and into the network record.
  4. Regular quality reviewRegular supervision. Once a year, mandates, feedback and further training are reviewed together. Anyone who fails to convince over a longer period no longer works for us.
  5. Shared standardsThe same impact architecture, the same survey instruments, the same rules on confidentiality and reporting — regardless of who is in the room.
  6. Accountable project leadEvery initiative has a permanent lead from the institute. This person is responsible for staffing, course and result — your contracting party remains MLI.
